Exploring New Orleans

Since today was our first day in New Orleans, we opted to just wander around rather than take any tours. Right off the bat, we took an obligatory stroll down Bourbon Street, which is -- how should I put this? -- an assault to the five senses. Stale beer and piss smell? Check. Large neon signs for Larry Flynt's Barely Legal Club University? Check. $20 deals for all-you-can-drink beer, all day and all night? Oh wait, this is your idea of a good time? Hey, me too! SPRING BREAK 09!!!1!!11!

The side streets of the French Quarter were a good deal quieter... we walked around Jackson Square with its stately cathedral and down the waterfront before starting the hunt for dinner. All the elegant balconies with their filigree ironwork were straight out of a picture book.
